This route is well above tree line for the second half going up Humboldt Peak. Start early, be aware of weather hazards, and be cautious near snowfields.

Description

Starting at South Colony Trailhead, this route climbs an old mining road until reaching Old South Colony Lakes Trailhead (4WD), and then heads NW on singletrack towards South Colony Lakes. Along the way, this route traces South Colony Creek with ample fishing opportunities in deep forest.

After ascending towards Upper South Colony Lakes, this route starts its brutal ascent up Humboldt Peak through a series of challenging switchbacks that are never-ending. It is a Class 2 route and easily climbed, but caution should be taken for any rock fall from other climbers. After gaining the peak, return where you came and enjoy the wonderful descent.
